Spokane Transit launches reduced fare program for low-income riders

SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane Transit Authority has launched a pilot program offering $1 fares for low-income residents, half the standard $2 fare, according to transit officials.

The “Opportunity” program will run for up to two years or until a $1.14 million funding cap is reached, STA said. The STA Board of Directors approved the initiative in July 2025 as part of the agency’s Connect 2035 strategic plan.

To qualify, individuals must have income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level and be enrolled in Washington State’s Basic Food program, according to STA. Participants must recertify eligibility annually…
