Local doctor pleads guilty to augmenting and reusing recalled CPAP machines

SPOKANE, Wash. — The U.S. Attorney’s Office says an eastern Washington doctor pled guilty to augmenting recalled medical devices to sell them as new to patients.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Philips Respironics CPAP and BiPAP machines were called in June 2021 due to foam in the device that could cause health risks including inflammatory response, asthma, nausea or vomiting, and toxic or cancer-causing effects.

57-year-old Dr. Eric Haeger of Brewster was accused of purchasing more than 500 used and recalled devices online, manually removing the foam, and providing them as new to Washington Medicaid patients. Dr. Haeger also directed his staff to bill Medicaid as if the devices were new…
