In 2025, the Inland Northwest food scene lost some mainstays but gained new, diverse concepts

As the Inlander’s food writer, I’m constantly on the prowl for a new place to grab a bite. The foodies of Inland Northwest are often right alongside me in this quest, rejoicing when an innovative new eatery opens its doors, but also sharing sincere disappointment when favorite spots shutter. While 2024 saw several notable closures of spots in downtown Spokane, food entrepreneurs quickly recognized an opportunity and filled many of those gaps this year, in the process introducing locals to plenty of new flavors and cultures.

While speaking with owners and chefs throughout the past year, the most common sentiment shared is that they’re not in it for the money. The late-night hours plus the razor-thin profit margins pose major challenges, and it’s a true love of food and community that keeps them going.

CLOSINGS

The start of 2025 saw the closing of Gordy’s Sichuan Cafe on the South Hill, which served top-notch Sichuan-style Chinese food for over 30 years. In October, Gena’s Mexican Kitchen filled the eatery’s old space with its authentic cuisine and will soon expand next door to build a full bar where Bottle Bay Brewing Co. formerly operated.

Tai Chi Bubble Tea served its last drinks from its small Kendall Yards shop in January (but no food vendor is filling the space). Later that month, Fiesta Mexicana on the lower South Hill closed, but a new Mexican restaurant, La Doña Cafecito, opened in its place shortly after…
