Someone vandalized downtown Spokane’s Abraham Lincoln statue with red paint over the holidays, with police saying they responded to a call about it in the early morning of Dec. 26, according to the Spokesman-Review. Although the Spokesman-Review and police offered no motive as to the vandalism, Dec. 26 was the 163rd anniversary of Lincoln’s hanging of 38 Sioux prisoners of war in Mankato, Minnesota, in the largest mass execution in American history. The men were captured during the 1862 Dakota War.
