Spokane County Major Crimes Detectives Investigate an Argument Between Roommates that Escalates into a Shooting

SPOKANE—On January 1, 2026, at approximately 3:25 pm, Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the report of a shooting at a home in the 600 block of S. Jefferson Street in Medical Lake. The adult male victim caller stated his roommate, later identified as 70-year-old James D. Milstead, shot him.

Deputies arrived and contacted Milstead, who appeared intoxicated as he answered the front door and tossed a silver revolver to the ground. They detained Milstead and secured the loaded firearm.

Deputies made exigent entry into the home and found the victim sitting on the floor, bleeding profusely from what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his left upper torso. They immediately provided emergency medical aid and worked to control the victim’s bleeding until relieved by Spokane County Fire District 3 Firefighters. The victim was transported to the hospital for additional medical treatment, and at last check, he was listed in serious but stable condition…
