Weatherman: ‘Super-dry’ NW coast will be prone to wildfires this summer

SPOKANE — Heading into a “very strong El Niño event” means dry conditions ahead for the Pacific Northwest for the year, popular weatherman Art Douglas said.

Douglas, professor emeritus of atmospheric sciences at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., has been speaking at the Spokane Ag Show since the winter of 1977-1978. He delivered his annual forecast to about 200 farmers Feb. 3.

There’s a lot of drought in the U.S. right now, Douglas noted. During his flight into Spokane from Arizona, “I’ve never seen that trip as bare of snow as I did this year,” he said…
