Spokane Public Schools’ first Winterfest engages students with experiential learning

For the last two school years, Spokane Public Schools has endeavored to get kids off their screens and back into real life. Whether that be joining a club, attending community events or just talking with friends at the lunch table, the Engage In Real Life initiative, aka EngageIRL, makes real-world connection a key component of each student’s education.

Time in class is only part of the education experience, and district officials have worked to ensure there are more chances to engage in educational experiences outside the classroom, too.

District students were scheduled to have the day off on Friday, Jan. 30, for a brief semester break. However, instead of expecting the kids or their families to entertain themselves (likely on a screen), Spokane Public Schools worked with LaunchNW, an initiative of the Innovia Foundation, to host the first ever Winterfest…
