Spokane, WASH. — A state bill that could have undermined a Spokane ordinance to address homelessness failed to make it out of a house committee.
The Spokane City Council unanimously approved the Safe and Accessible Streets Ordinance in October, allowing police to issue citations for illegal camping on public property. However, House Bill 2489 would have restricted local governments from enforcing bans on public camping unless “adequate alternative shelter” is available.
