Eight Pirate wrestlers headed to state

FREEMAN––The Pirate Wrestling Team qualified eight wrestlers for the Mat Classic XXXVII in Tacoma this weekend, February 20-21, and made history in doing so. Eighth grader Annika Winona is the first girl wrestler in Pomeroy history to qualify for the state meet, and two Pirates, Peyton Cannon (190) and Kole Zimmerman (175), were Regional Champs.

Winona competed in the 110-lb. division and faced Emilie Simpson of Mary Walker in the semi-final after a quarterfinal bye. Winona pinned Simpson at 3:12. In the second-place match, Winona won by fall over LeeAna Peacock of Newport at :29. In the championship, Abby Starr of Republic-Curlew pinned her at :48.

Cannon pinned Evan Tipps of Coulee at 3:49 to win the 190 lb. division. He defeated Solomon Holmbert of Davenport and Noah Baker of Freeman to advance to the championship round…
