Appeals court reviews Spokane teen shooting sentence

SPOKANE, Wash. — A court of appeals hearing on Tuesday took a new look at the prison sentence for Leland Westerlund stemming from a 2023 East Central Spokane shooting that killed one teenager and critically injured two others.

Westerlund is currently serving 32 years in prison. He was 16 at the time of the shooting and was the only juvenile among the four people arrested, though he was tried as an adult.

At Tuesday’s hearing, Westerlund’s defense argued that the sentence was not legal under the Sentencing Reform Act. The defense noted that the trial court used the wrong offender score, asking for the sentence to be reversed and sent back for a new sentencing hearing…
