SLPD Charges Man with Murder of City Employee

The Sugar Land police have arrested Overeth Riascos Barahona, a 40-year-old Colombian native, on charges of first-degree murder.

The incident took place on Wednesday when Barahona was driving a Toyota Highlander that tragically slammed into a City of Sugar Land truck, resulting in the death of Joseph Aponte, a 56-year-old resident of Needville. The Missouri City police pursued Barahona and two other individuals before the collision.

The pursuit arose from their involvement in a home burglary in Missouri City, wherein stolen property from the crime was recovered inside the Highlander. Regrettably, the collision occurred on the westbound lanes of U.S. Highway 90A at Gillingham Lane shortly before 10:30 a.m.

Aponte, a dedicated Public Works employee, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Meanwhile, the three occupants of the Highlander were swiftly transported to a local hospital for medical attention. Today, Barahona was released from the hospital and brought to the Sugar Land Police Department for further investigation before being transferred to the Fort Bend County Jail. The other two individuals involved in the burglary were also arrested and charged by the Missouri City police.
