A Texas lawmaker is proposing a civil truancy process, says absence is a big problem in Texas

A Texas lawmaker sees a big problem in schools when it comes to attendance and he’s proposing a new bill to target the problem.

Houston State Senator Paul Bettencourt wants a civil truancy process that would allow school officials to compel parents to meet with them or even knock on doors if their kids don’t show up. The bill will mandate school districts come up with a truancy plan.

The Republican says families should be able to get help. He says the markers that worry him about the school shooters from Santa Fe and Uvalde were truancy. “The Uvalde shooter had truancy that was well over a year, The Santa Fe shooter had truancy that was well over a month.”

He adds dropouts tend to make less money later in life. The Republican says families should be able to get help.

Bettencourt filed the bill two years ago and says this time he’s got strong bipartisan support.
