Judge stops Texas AG’s rule requiring case data handover

HOUSTON (KIAH) — A Travis County judge has issued a temporary injunction blocking enforcement of a new regulatory scheme created by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton that would have forced prosecutors in the state’s larger counties to turn over several internal case records to his office.

Monday’s ruling comes in response to a lawsuit filed by Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee on behalf of Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare, alongside several other Texas counties and district attorneys.

“This rule is nothing more than a power grab by the Attorney General,” Menefee said. “Paxton is trying to intimidate locally elected prosecutors and use his office to score political points. We’re not going to let that happen in Harris County.”…
