Houston woman accused of fatally shooting can collector said she mistook her for an intruder

A Houston woman charged with murder in the death of an aluminum can collector opened fire, saying she believed the person was messing with a screen to her apartment and about to break in, prosecutors said Monday in court.

Amber McNulty, 43, told authorities she did not initially recognize the woman she shot as Linda Edwards, the 75-year-old she and other residents at a 4000 block of Griggs Road apartment complex knew to come by and collect recyclables. She instead donned a ballistic vest, armed herself with a rifle and opened fire through a window July 15 as Edwards appeared to approach her apartment.
