An all-boys school in Houston, Texas, has announced a controversial new policy stating that any cell phone found on its campus will be destroyed by staff.
The Policy
According to KHOU, Western Academy introduced the strict rule last week, with Headmaster Jason Hebert explaining the decision in a letter to parents. The letter warned that students caught with cell phones will face suspension, and repeat offenders could be expelled.
“They are children, you are adults. This is your responsibility,” Hebert wrote. The new policy also states that staff will immediately destroy any devices discovered on campus.
The Reason Behind The Ban
Hebert stated that the rule was implemented to protect students from exposure to harmful online content and to help them focus on their studies and personal development. He emphasized that many students lack the maturity to handle the responsibility that comes with owning a smartphone.
“He does not have enough self-mastery to use it without causing great harm to himself,” Hebert continued in the letter. “We all experience the negative effects of it daily. You know it is not good for him.”…
