$100 million apartment project breaks ground on Montrose’s ‘Disco Kroger’ site

A $100 million apartment project is breaking ground this week on the site of the former “Disco Kroger” store in Montrose, bringing new life to an empty lot that once housed a famous LGBTQ late-night hangout spot.

Expected to open in late 2027, Southeastern Company’s project will be named Artis Montrose — a play on the phrase “Art is Montrose,” as a nod to the neighborhood’s counterculture, creative roots.

The seven-story midrise marks yet another chapter in the ongoing transformation of this part of Montrose, where several new apartments and mixed-use projects have reshaped the neighborhood’s character in recent years…
