Houston councilwoman raises concern after pride crosswalk arrests

HOUSTON (KIAH) – During a late Wednesday morning’s Houston City Council meeting, Council Member Abbie Kamin (District C) criticized the handling of Sunday’s overnight protests as crews were set to start the removal of the rainbow-themed crosswalk in the city’s Montrose neighborhood and called for the Houston Police Department to release the procedures of how it deals with community issues.

The discussion stems from the removal of the Pride crosswalk at the intersection of Westheimer Road and Taft Street in the Montrose area. The original rainbow design had become a visible symbol of Houston’s LGBTQ+ community, and a memorial for a victim who died back in 2017.

Since the announcement of the crosswalk being removed, there have been three protests, all peaceful. One in the early afternoon on Sunday, the early evening, and overnight.
