When she heard her friend, Anthony Curry, was among the bodies found in Houston’s bayous, Kiki Aguero repeated his name, her voice modulating between a question and a plea.
“Anthony Curry? Anthony? Anthony, man.” She let out a heavy sigh. “But he’s not known for trouble.”
Aguero and Curry had lived together on the sidewalk outside of the Beacon, a day shelter downtown, and when law enforcement forced them to move, they spent some time sleeping on the porch of St. Joseph. Aguero eventually became part of Houston’s homelessness success story, moving into housing and enrolling in a social work program at Ultimate Medical Academy. She had thought Curry had, too – that would explain why she hadn’t seen him recently…
