An abandoned apartment complex in west Houston keeps catching fire, and the city hopes to counter the issue by building a fire station in its place.

Earlier this month, city officials said they bought the deserted Park on Westview Apartments at Westview and Gessner for a major redevelopment project, and they cited safety issues, including fires, as part of their push to do so. Since then, the complex has reportedly caught fire twice, including as recently as Thursday morning, in a trend that could accelerate the apartments’ demolition.

Houston City Council Member Amy Peck, who represents the area, projected demolition would happen within six months of the October property purchase. But after more fires, she wants to accelerate the process…
