It’s been a tough time in the barbecue world, considering the number of smokehouse closures, the high cost of meat and the continued strain on the bottom line. But don’t tell one Houston area pitmaster that, as his multiple restaurants are trying to help out folks in a tough spot.
On Oct. 28, Killen’s BBQ announced that on Halloween, it was offering free barbecue sandwich plates to government employees unable to earn income due to the federal shutdown. The offer was good while supplies lasted at every Killen’s BBQ location—Cypress, Pearland, The Woodlands—and at Killen’s in the Heights neighborhood of Houston.
The current government shutdown started Oct. 1 and is the third such shutdown over President Donald Trump’s two terms. Approximately 900,000 employees have been furloughed and around 2 million are working without pay.
