HOUSTON (KIAH)-–Through workshops, webinars and housing counseling, the Non-Profit Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America, also known as NACA is helping long-time renters own for the first time.
One woman, Tangelia Hunter, was determined to go through the program to turn her troubling past around to own her own dream home. After a troubling life of addiction, homelessness and abuse, a year ago, Hunter became a new homeowner thanks to help from the Houston Housing Authority and NACA.
” I spent $1,200 in rent. Ask me how much my mortgage is. Just ask…$2183. Same three bed room, same this and this is mine. I only pay a portion of that because I have the Houston Housing authority voucher. “I was just trying to get straight approved from the bank. And you have to have a credit score. You have to show that you have financial state… You know stability and I could prove all those things but I didn’t know how to make one thing connect to the other, so that’s where NACA stepped in.”
