This Conroe woman was living in a shed. Now, she’s one of four families with new mortgage-free homes

After living for months in a small storage shed behind her deteriorating home on Ave. G in Conroe’s historic Dugan community, Barbara Jones said she had to pinch herself as she received the keys to her brand-new home Wednesday.

Jones had lived in her childhood home since it was built in 1948. However, after a tree fell on it and the roof collapsed, the 150-square-foot shed became her only option.

She was one of four families moving into new homes just in time for the holidays as part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant program. The city has participated in the federal program since the 1990s…
