TxDOT Reminds Drivers: It’s the law to slow down or move over for first responders

HOUSTON (CW39) – The Texas Department of Transportation is reminding drivers about an important – and often overlooked – safety law: you must move over or slow down for first responders and roadside workers.

In a new message shared on Facebook, TxDOT highlighted how essential these crews are to keeping Texas roads safe. Their post reads:

“First responders, law enforcement and other roadside crews do essential work to assist motorists and keep our roads safe. Drivers, do your part to protect them by moving over a lane or slowing down 20 mph below the speed limit. It’s the law. #BeSafeDriveSmart #DriveLikeATexan”

What the Law Requires

When you see emergency lights, hazard lights, or roadside crews on the shoulder in Texas, you must either:

  • Move over one lane, if it’s safe to do so, OR
  • Slow down at least 20 mph below the posted speed limit.

This applies to police, firefighters, EMS, tow trucks, TxDOT vehicles, and any other authorized roadside workers.
