Brandy and Monica’s The Boy Is Mine Tour took me back to my own ’90s Houston music memories

Nostalgia is a powerful thing everywhere. But it’s particularly potent in Houston.

Maybe it’s because we live in a city that doesn’t always hold on to history. Neighborhoods are razed, historic buildings are demolished and beloved venues disappear overnight. It’s why we still hold out hope for a renovated Astrodome. It’s why fans champion Houston’s mid-2000s hip-hop dominance and fill dance floors for throwback theme nights. (During my intermittent side hustle as a DJ, some of the biggest crowds were for a Spice Girls night and a tribute to the iconic ‘90s nightclub Heaven.)
