Switchyards, Houston’s new 24/7 coworking space, courts city’s lonely remote workers

At first glance, it looks like a coffee shop for the millennial set, with its indie soundtrack, soft lighting and vases of dried flowers. A closer look at the rows of headphone-wearing laptop users might suggest a coworking space.

But Switchyards, an Atlanta-based chain that opened its first Houston location in Montrose this year and sold its 250 available memberships within hours, claims to be neither.

“We’re actually carving out this new category: We call it a neighborhood work club,” said Switchyards creative director Brandon Hinman. He likened it to a gym membership, but for work. “I think that in a few years, everyone’s going to have a membership to their neighborhood work club.”…
