The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it would take steps to improve its recall enforcement after four of the nation’s largest retail stores failed to pull a recalled baby formula off the shelves.
The FDA sent warning letters Monday to executives of Target, Walmart, Kroger and Albertsons claiming the companies continued to sell ByHeart infant formula for days or weeks despite a Nov. 11 recall of all products. The recall was issued after the formula was linked to an infant botulism outbreak that hospitalized more than 50 babies across 19 states.
