Houston fears serial killer as body count stacks up

Houston’s bayous, once marketed as ribbons of green waterways weaving throughout the city, are again sites of grim attention.

On Monday morning, police recovered two more bodies, according to KHOU, bringing the total number of bayou-related deaths in Houston this year to 33 and reopening a conversation many residents hoped had quieted with time.

2 more grisly discoveries

Both discoveries were made around 9:30 a.m., ending a lull of more than two months without a recovery. The timing alone was enough to stir unease, recalling September, when six bodies were found in just 11 days. That cluster prompted public briefings from city officials and fueled widespread speculation — including fears, later dismissed by police, of a serial killer operating along the waterways.

A history of recent bodies found

The first body was found in Buffalo Bayou near the 100 block of Crawford Street, a downtown stretch better known for joggers, cyclists, and skyline views. Police say a passerby noticed something unusual in the water and called 911. The Houston Police Department’s dive team was dispatched, transforming a familiar urban backdrop into a crime scene.

The second discovery occurred miles away, near Brays Bayou at the intersection of Texas Spur 5 and Old Spanish Trail. Police later clarified that this individual was not found in the water itself, but on nearby rocks — an important distinction that nevertheless raised questions.
