K-9 nearly drowned during arrest, HCSO says

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (CW39) – A Harris County Sheriff’s Office K-9 was injured while helping deputies arrest a wanted suspect, according to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

Gonzalez said K-9 Ghost was hurt during a chase after the suspect ran from deputies and tried to drown the dog while trying to escape. The suspect was arrested and remains in custody.

The incident happened on Lockwood Drive near Antha Street, where deputies were searching for a man who was wanted on active felony warrants. Deputies said when the suspect was found, he crashed his vehicle into a ditch and ran toward a pond.

K-9 Handler Deputy Almeida and K-9 Ghost followed the man into that wooded area near the pond. K-9 Ghost caught the wanted man, but investigators said he tried to drown the dog. Deputies got in the water and helped take the man into custody.

He was taken to a hospital for treatment related to the dog bite. K-9 Ghost also received immediate care and was taken to a veterinary clinic as a precaution. Gonzalez said the dog is expected to be OK.

No deputies were injured in the incident…
