Cocaine Deal Gone Bad Leads to Houston Storage Unit Killing

A Detroit man is now at the center of a Houston murder case after prosecutors charged him in the November shooting of a woman at a self-storage facility, according to court filings. More than two months after the Nov. 5 killing, a murder complaint names 57-year-old Kip Stitts in the death of Sherry Dawson, who was found with multiple gunshot wounds inside a unit in the 6400 block of Eastex Freeway. Records indicate Stitts has been charged but is not in custody.

Scene And Official Response

Houston police say officers and Houston Fire Department paramedics were dispatched around 10:10 a.m. on Nov. 5 to reports of a shooting along the Eastex Freeway service road. Responders found a woman who was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a release from the Homicide Division, the department said detectives are investigating and urged anyone with information to contact investigators or Crime Stoppers, per the Houston Police Department.

How Investigators Say They Tracked A Suspect

As reported by Click2Houston, prosecutors point to a mix of phone-location data and surveillance footage to link Stitts to the crime scene. Investigators say phone records show the suspect’s device traveling north out of Houston the night of the shooting and arriving back in Detroit the following day.

According to those filings, storage-facility video appears to show a truck trailing Dawson’s vehicle into the complex, followed by what looks like a physical struggle and her collapse. Authorities also believe the suspect vehicle was a Ford F-250 that had reportedly been purchased in Beaumont a few days before the killing…
