Cy-Fair ISD superintendent says Greg Abbott’s demands regarding Islamic Games contained ‘inaccuracies’

Douglas Killian told the governor the Houston-area school district “has nothing to hide” after Abbott demanded that Cy-Fair ISD sever its ties with the Houston Islamic Games, which are slated to be held in the fall.

After Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called for Cy-Fair ISD to sever its ties with the 2026 Houston Islamic Games, the school district’s superintendent responded by challenging the governor’s claims and saying his Jan. 21 letter to district leaders contained “significant inaccuracies.”

In a Jan. 29 letter to Abbott that was written by Cy-Fair ISD Superintendent Douglas Killian, he pushed back on the governor’s characterization of the Islamic Games being scheduled at a Cy-Fair ISD high school later this year. Killian told Abbott that community use of school district facilities does not amount to sponsorship or endorsement by the Houston-area district.

“Neither Cypress-Fairbanks ISD nor any of its schools is hosting the Houston Islamic Games,” Killian wrote in his letter. “This past year, CFISD has had 15 different churches of different denominations using our facilities on a weekly basis. Our policies, as required by state and federal law, do not distinguish between religions in our facility use guidelines, nor do they distinguish between religious and non-religious viewpoints. … CFISD has nothing to hide.”…
