Workers in Freedmen’s Town improperly removed more than 120 historic bricks, civic leaders say

More than 120 historic bricks in Freedmen’s Town historic streets were improperly removed and seven were damaged by construction workers on Friday, according to community leaders.

In an Instagram post, Joe Panzarella, president of the Freedmen’s Town Super Neighborhood in Houston’s Fourth Ward, said a private developer that hired out contractors was responsible for the brick removal. The workers were tapping into a water line Friday morning on Wilson Street, Houston City Council Member Abbie Kamin said.
