The Woodlands wants Elon Musk to dig beneath its Town Center.
The Township’s Board of Directors unanimously authorized staff during a meeting Thursday to submit an application to Musk’s The Boring Company. In mid-January, the company issued a request for proposals (RFP) for its “Tunnel Vision Challenge,” essentially an open call for communities to pitch ideas for how its tunneling technology could be used locally. The selected community could receive up to one mile of tunnel construction at no cost.
The proposal, dubbed “The Current,” envisions two parallel 12-foot-diameter tunnels running beneath the Town Center corridor near The Waterway. Electric vehicles would transport passengers between Waterway Square, the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, Town Green Park and nearby hotels during peak traffic periods and major events.
Township officials framed the concept as a potential solution to recurring congestion during concerts, festivals and large gatherings, when Lake Robbins Drive and surrounding intersections can become gridlocked.
