HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (CW39) – Thursday, the Houston Independent School District voted 9-0 Thursday to close 12 campuses, a decision that has sparked outrage across dozens of neighborhoods.

Among the schools on the chopping block is Burrus Elementary in Independence Heights, a campus recognized with a state historical marker and deeply rooted in Houston’s Black history. The school is widely recognized as a trailblazing educational institution for African Americans dating back to the early 1900s.
