$4.6 million Houston Zoo rhino expansion could wrap this fall

One exhibit at the Houston Zoo is getting a major glow-up as part of a wider wave of habitat upgrades—and renovations could wrap up this fall.

A $4.6 million rehabilitation of the zoo’s rhino exhibit is underway, according to a recent filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Registration. While details submitted to the TDLR are subject to change, construction could wrap up this November.

Improvements are underway for the existing rhino exhibit and guest viewing areas, including modifications to habitat features, barriers, hardscape and drainage all to support animal welfare, safety and accessibility, according to the filing. In total, the project encompasses more than 215,000 square feet.
