City of Clever keeping its police force after talks of contract with Christian County Sheriff’s Office

CLEVER, Mo. — The City of Clever, Missouri, is keeping its police department.

Weeks after talks began between city leaders and the Christian County Sheriff’s Office regarding law enforcement coverage for the small town, those same leaders have announced that the deal will not go through.

In a Facebook post from the Board of Aldermen and Mayor, it reads, “Over the past several weeks, the Mayor and Board of Aldermen have spent countless hours gathering information, discussing options, listening to residents, and considering what is in the best long-term interest of our city. One message we have heard clearly throughout this process is that our community values an independent police department that is dedicated specifically to serving our city, understands our community, and remains directly accountable to the people who live here. We respect those sentiments and believe they are important factors in this decision. After careful consideration, we have decided not to pursue a contract with Christian County for police services at this time.”…
