Springfield office offers class on emergency response before first responders arrive

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – The Springfield-Greene County Office of Emergency Management is offering “Until Help Arrives” classes to teach residents what to do if they are the first person on the scene of an accident or disaster, before EMS crews, firefighters, or police arrive.

“A lot of people think the first responder is going to be that ambulance, police, or fire, but really it’s the people who experienced the event,” said Nicolette Zangara, Public Information Officer for the Springfield-Greene County OEM. “And there’s a lot that you can do in those minutes that can make a life-or-death difference for the other victims around you.”

Class addresses hazards across the Ozarks

The class is built to help anyone handle the kinds of accidents that happen across the Ozarks.

“Living in the Ozarks, there are so many different hazards that we can come across,” Zangara said. “It could be something as minor as somebody slipping and falling, and maybe they break skin, and it turns into a major bleed. Or it could be something more major, like a car accident or a tornadic event.”

Hands-on training included
