Veteran, former Top Gun pilot speaks out on veteran suicide crisis

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – September is National Suicide Prevention Month. Matthew “Whiz” Buckley, a Navy F/A-18 fighter pilot, adversary Topgun graduate and combat veteran, spoke about his experience with trauma and loss, and the broader veteran suicide crisis.

Buckley said the transition from flying fighter jets to civilian life was difficult. In 15 years of flying fighter jets, he said he lost 16 friends, none of them to combat.

“Bad weather, mechanical issues, stupidity, just, you know, but still 16 brothers lost,” Buckley said…
