October heatwave brings near record highs later this week

It’s been a tug of war between summer and fall, with the area finally experiencing some fall temperatures. At least that’s the case in the morning.

Monday’s morning lows were the coolest since May. But while the mornings feel more fall-like, there are still hints of summer heat in the afternoon.

Highs over the past couple of days were in the low 80s, or close to 10° above normal. An even stronger summer surge will develop by Wednesday as high temperatures climb into the upper 80s.

The summer surge will persist through the weekend, with highs near 90° possible each day into early next week.

Afternoon highs will be about 15° above normal, and the lows will trend warm as well. Record highs may remain just out of reach, but not by much.

There are some things to watch for in this pattern: Most 80° days ever recorded in October and the latest 90° day ever recorded.

The pattern is a very sunny one that offers no chance of rain. There is one wild card, though: a tropical system coming out of the Gulf as we head into the weekend. Right now, it looks like any influence from a tropical system would remain to our east.

The pattern may finally shift near the middle of the month with a chance for rain followed by cooler weather…
