Tuesday, January 23: Dreary days and soggy soil

We’ve traded concerns for ice and snow with rain and fog. Temperatures at this hour are well above freezing, but still cool. Today’s high in Springfield of 43° marks the warmest day since January 12th, and won’t change much tonight.

Another wave of rain is overspreading the area this evening. It looks like amounts will be heaviest to the east where amounts of half an inch or more are expected. This is on top of yesterday’s rain and also on top of frozen ground conditions that aren’t letting much rainwater in. A Flood Watch has been issued for the overnight hours for South Central Missouri and North Central Arkansas.

The other concern will be fog. It’s been thick at times already today and will likely worsen overnight with widespread visibilities well under a mile. The lowest visibilities will likely be near sunrise and they’ll be slow to improve Wednesday morning.

Another wave of showers and fog is expected Wednesday night into Thursday morning with additional bouts of fog and showers into this weekend.
