Work starting on new Target in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Last summer, the City of Springfield announced that a second Target store for the city was in the works.  The news created a lot of buzz amongst fans of the retailer.  Six months after preliminary details about the development were released, we’re finally seeing several signs the project is about to begin.

During a city council meeting back in June, a development agreement between the City of Springfield and developer Thomas Walker was approved. This step paved the way for the project at a site near West Bypass and W. Sunshine St. called Sunshine Towne Centre.  During the council meeting, it was mentioned construction could begin by the end of the summer.  However, it hasn’t been until recent days that construction equipment has finally rolled in.

According to plans filed with the city, the new Target is set to have 150,000 sq. ft of space and will include a new type of store format the company recently rolled out. The size means the new store will not be as large as a Super Target, but will still be larger than the existing Target on South Glenstone.
