2023 survey of homeless population in Springfield completed

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Advocates in Springfield are wrapping up their annual Point In Time (PIT) count to determine how many homeless people are living in Springfield.

The hope is that someday that number will be zero, but for now, the count helps organizations access funds to bring people out of homelessness.

At Grace United Methodist Church, dinner was prepared for the homeless. While being served, volunteers would ask where the person was sleeping Wednesday night and what needs they see in the community.

“Those needs change on a person-to-person basis, on a nightly basis, on a daily basis, whether it’s raining, whether it’s not raining and whether it’s hot, whether it’s cold,” said Marcus Whalen, who has been homeless off and on for the last decade.

Whalen said there are not enough resources for the homeless in Springfield.

“But I have no answer to those lack of resources that are needed out there,” Whalen said.
