Changes to City Utilities bus system coming soon

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Changes to the City Utilities bus system are coming soon.

According to a press release from CU, several recommendations were outlined in a Transit Optimization Study called ConnectSGF.

Those recommendations included expanding evening coverage on weekdays, increasing bus frequency, adding Saturday route coverage and changing to every 30-minute departures on weekday routes from the Transit Center.

In addition to those changes, CU is also planning to modify Monday through Saturday service to end at 10 p.m., change Sunday service to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and eliminate service on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

CU estimated these changes will cost $200,000 to $250,000 per year and plan to have updates completely implemented within a year.

Management and the CU board also expressed support for a fare reduction of 20%, including a base fare reduction from $1.25 to $1. However, any fare-related changes will require approval from City Council, as well as the City Utilities Citizens Advisory Council and the Board of Public Utilities.
