‘It literally sounded like we’d hit something’: I-44 pothole pops family’s tire

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Now that the Ozarks have thawed from the severe winter weather, there is another inconvenience for drivers on the road.

Dozens of potholes have opened up across Springfield and surrounding areas, creating a danger for drivers.

OzarksFirst spoke to a woman who hit not just one, but two potholes on I-44.

“I wasn’t expecting a pothole to do that much noise or damage,” said Chelsea Tudor.

The Tudors were driving eastbound on I-44 early Tuesday morning when their car hit a pothole.

“Our car alerted us that we had a flat tire, so we pulled to the side of the road,” Tudor said. “On our way pulling over, we hit another pothole.”

I-44 is MoDOT’s responsibility. MoDOT tells OzarksFirst they plan on filling in most of the state road’s potholes next week.

Springfield Public Works has filled in more than 25 potholes since the severe winter weather hit the Ozarks.

“It doesn’t take that long at all, really, to get the truck there and get it all filled in and cleared off,” said Superintendent of the Streets Colten Harris.
