Mt. Vernon man rescued from frozen Monett park pond

MONETT, Mo. – A man was rescued from an ice-covered pond in Monett Thursday evening, January 25 around 7:20 p.m.

According to the Monett Police Department, the 20-year-old from Mt. Vernon was at South Park in Monett in his pickup truck when officers approached him to check on him. When he saw officers approaching, he drove off, driving into the ice-covered pond at the park.

His truck was partially submerged in the icy water, so he couldn’t get out. The truck continued to sink below the water, and emergency crews who had been called to assist weren’t yet at the scene. Officers were able to get him out by getting into the pond and breaking the truck’s window.

He was taken to a local hospital for evaluation but appeared uninjured.
