Springfield non-profit leading new affordable housing project

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Working to address the need for affordable housing in Springfield, one northside nonprofit is spearheading a new project to increase available housing stock.

Amy Blansit, CEO of the Drew Lewis Foundation, is heading up the project to develop a pocket community at the northwest corner of Broadway Avenue and Poplar Street.

The foundation has purchased an acre there and plans to build 14 Craftsman-style homes spaced about eight feet apart. The homes are to include recessed garages, front porches, and connecting sidewalks to help foster the community.

Blansit said the project will have a low-income component for eligibility as well as a socio-economic blend. Her goal is to keep half of the houses in the $135,000 range, affordable for families the foundation and other nonprofit organizations work with.

The remaining half of the homes would be sold at current market values.

Blansit said she believes that a strong social economic blend is what really builds healthy neighborhoods and she hope so find families for the reduced-price homes who are committed to building a community.
