MoDOT pushes back timeline on East Sunshine Street improvements

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has pushed back the timeline for improvements to a four-mile section of East Sunshine Street.

The project was originally going to start this spring but according to MoDOT’s website, construction is now estimated to begin in 2025.

Business owners who spoke to OzarksFirst say they’re concerned about raised medians in the area making it difficult for customers to access their stores.

A meeting for locals to learn more about the project, ask questions and voice their concerns is scheduled for today, Feb. 6, at the Schweitzer Student Center on East Sunshine from 4:30-6 p.m.

The project is expected to cost $10.7 million and would improve five traffic signals along East Sunshine between Glenstone Avenue and Farm Road 199. Current plans also include adding right turn lanes and raised medians in areas with the most crashes.

According to MoDOT, 728 crashes were recorded during a five-year period, and 80% of those were caused by a driver trying to make a left turn or rear-ending another car.
