Police respond to Springfield gas leak that led to evacuations

UPDATE 3:34 p.m. — City Utilities has reported that they have restored gas to all except one home affected by the gas main break.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Six people were evacuated from their homes after an accident that caused a gas leak Saturday afternoon.

According to SPD Lt. Heather Anderson, a vehicle accidentally hit a gas main near Cherokee Street and Kentwood Avenue at around 12:10 p.m., causing a gas leak and leading to six people having to evacuate from their homes. No injuries were reported at the scene.

Springfield police, fire, and city utilities are currently investigating the accident.

The residents who evacuated are allowed to return home but several people in the area will temporarily be without gas as city utilities work to repair the gas main.
