Springfield, area schools cancel classes due to expected snowfall

Springfield Public Schools officials canceled classes Monday, citing the forecast for possible heavy snow during the morning commute as the reason for the closure.

As of Monday morning, the National Weather Service had issued a Winter Weather Advisory through 6 p.m., with the forecast calling for a 70% chance of precipitation in Springfield, with as much as 3 inches of snow possibly mixing with rain later in the day.

The school closure applies to both in-person and live virtual classes. Information about other activities and athletics will be shared via the district’s social media platforms, according to a message sent to parents and others. For more information, see the district website at sps.org .

Outside of Springfield, many area districts also canceled classes or went virtual due to the weather.

Nixa, Republic and Branson were among those that canceled in-person and virtual classes, while Willard and Logan-Rogersville announced they would hold Alternative Method of Instruction days, which means students do not report to school in person and are either given assignments or expected to learn virtually.
