SPD starting crackdown process on Video Lottery Terminals

Monday night, Springfield City Council passed a bill that has outlawed Video Lottery Terminals throughout the city.

While the law technically is already in effect, Springfield Police are taking Tuesday to educate.

“Officers are out now with the copy of the ordinance and they’re going around to the locations that we know have these and just let them know the ordinance passed and that they are now in violation if they’re operating,” Springfield Police Chief Paul Williams said.

Then on Thursday, enforcement begins.

“Tomorrow we’ll start going back some of those folks and, and businesses and make sure they have [complied]. If they have not, then that’s where actual enforcement action would take place, where we primarily write citations and there could be an arrest,” Williams said. “It’s $500 for a first offense. $1,000 for the second offense and 30 days in jail for a third offense.”

Williams says he doesn’t anticipate any arrests.
