Republic students throw beloved janitor a surprise party

REPUBLIC, Mo. – For the kids at the Republic Early Childhood Center , nothing is more exciting than a birthday party. Thursday’s celebration wasn’t for one of the students, instead it was an 80th birthday for beloved staff member, Ken Hickey.

Better known in the hallways as Kenny Cool.

“Mr. Ken is pretty special. He is always kind and helpful and really values our little ones,” says Principal Alyssa Phillips.

Students held banners, threw confetti and had the guest of honor parade through the halls. The school resource officer followed behind with bubbles wands.

“He was really surprised,” says Assistant Principal Alyssa Phillips, “He told us a couple of time he had no idea. He really appreciated and enjoyed it.”

Mr. Ken is beginning his second year as the janitor at the Republic Early Childhood Center. He has a big job, tidying up after 250 students. If anyone deserves a party, it’s Ken.

“Everyone loves a good party,” explains Phillips, “It’s a big milestone, an 80th birthday.”
